I love having a quilt-in-progress that I am completely obsessed with. Once I finish the quilt I am very happy to move on, so the feeling is fleeting. I am in the middle of an obsession right now. I am making a map quilt of a portion of the Mississippi River. The map, drawn in 1944 for the Army Corps of Engineers, shows how the river has changed course over time. The section I am working on is about 10 miles (north to south) in Mississippi and Arkansas. The Arkansas side is almost finished and I can't wait to continue working on the east side of the river!
To see more details on how I am constructing this piece, please visit my blog. There are two posts up with many photos showing the process.
In case you want to make a map quilt of your very own, I have a three-hour hands on mapmaking class coming up on Sunday, June 4 at the Charlton Sewing Center in Charlton, MA. We will be making small quilts of Old Sturbridge Village.
This week I purchased this book by Jill K. Berry and Linden McNeill. It is an amazing resource for anyone who wants to make map art. I have just flipped through it a few times and I am already inspired to try some new techniques.
Hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!
